Fútbol en un temporal
El partido entre Estonia y Serbia, por la eliminatoria para la Eurocopa de 2012, se jugó bajo una intensa nevada. Lituania 1-3 España
La irrupción de Juan Mata permitió a la selección española, aún con cierta fortuna en los dos primeros goles, salir airosa del 'patatal' de Kaunas, donde ganó a Lituania por 1-3, y continuar así su marcha triunfal en la fase de la clasificación para la Eurocopa 2012, cuya puerta tiene prácticamente abierta.
Un balón desviado por Andrius Skerla significó el primer tanto de Xavi y un autogol de Tadas Kjanskas a centro de Mata, cuando los lituanos se crecían y soñaban con un triunfo heroico, cimentaron la victoria del conjunto de Vicente del Bosque, que redondeó el encuentro con un bello tanto de Mata, tras una jugada de toque marca de este equipo.
Como siempre en este país báltico, fue una victoria complicada, más si cabe en un terreno de juego bautizado jocosamente como el 'Kaunas Arena', donde se hace más que complicado que un equipo como el español despliegue su fútbol habitual de toque.
En esta ocasión España encajó el primer gol de la historia en Lituania, obra del valencianista Marius Stankevicius con un zapatazo espectacular lejano que sorprendió a Iker Casillas.
El enorme disparo del lateral diestro lituano complicó más de lo debido la vida a la Roja, que tras adelantarse en el marcador pudo sentenciar en un par de acciones de Fernando Llorente. Pero no lo hizo y hubo unos minutos de incertidumbre y de sueño lituano. La suerte, en forma del autogol de Kjanskas, permitió recobrar el rumbo a los españoles.
Xavi Hernández, el nuevo 'centenario' de la selección española, exhibió su calidad en el 'patatal' de Kaunas, donde se creció en difíciles condiciones para su estilo depurado y, sin Iniesta al lado, fue el guía de España.
El centrocampista del Barcelona dio una nueva lección en un terreno muy malo por irregular y por falta de césped, que lógicamente equilibró las fuerzas.
Xavi pareció encarrilar la quinta victoria en otros tantos partidos en esta fase previa con un gol afortunado -su disparo rozó en Andrius Skerla y se envenenó para superar por alto al meta Karcemarskas- y fue el faro de nuevo de la Roja con su maestría. Quien es bueno, es bueno. Xavi lo es. Y mucho. Ni siquiera el hecho de jugar en un campo tan pésimo le impide mostrar su categoría.
Vicente del Bosque innovó el once inicial, como estaba previsto, para repartir los minutos en esta concentración. Entraron nuevos, respecto al encuentro ante la República Checa, Iraola, Albiol, Javi Martínez, Cazorla y Fernando Llorente.
Todos cumplieron y el equipo español supo manejarse y adaptarse a las difíciles circunstancias. Alternó como pudo el toque con Xavi al frente, se fajó sin descanso, como Xabi Alonso y Javi Martínez, y en determinados momentos empleó el pase largo para que Fernando Llorente, con su corpulencia, ejerciera de pivote y fuera una pesadilla para los centrales locales para buscar la llegada desde atrás de sus compañeros o aprovechar su habilidad en el área.
España no tardó excesivamente en hacerse con el mando táctico del partido, porque, como se presumía, el cuadro de Raimondas Zutautas fundamentó sus aspiraciones en pertrecharse atrás y buscar la contra.
El gol de Xavi no tardó en llegar y eso rompió algo el esquema de los lituanos, que sin embargo no se rindieron y trataron de revertir la situación. Mikoliunas dio guerra a Iraola por la derecha de la zaga española y Sernas y Danilevicius, con su movilidad, también por momentos a Piqué y Albiol.
España pudo sentenciar antes y después del descanso por medio de Fernando Llorente, clave en la victoria en Salamanca ante los bálticos con su doblete, pero en Kaunas se encontró con el portero Zydrunas Karcemarskas.
Del Bosque no tardó en dar los primeros minutos de esta concentración a David Silva en lugar de David Villa, frenado por el valencianista Stankevicius por la banda izquierda, quien, justo después, sorprendió a Iker Casillas con un poderoso disparo muy alejado que entró junto al poste derecho ante el festejo de la afición lituana, que comenzaba a creer casi en los milagros.
El empate devolvió al partido al guión inicial. Lituania volvió a echarse más atrás y España, con Xavi al mando, recobró el dominio del balón y la iniciativa absoluta ante Lituania, que insistía en creer y, con arreones, incomodaba.

The Maccabi Petah Tikva attacker had been on the pitch only six minutes when he settled matters with a low strike from inside the box.
The win, Israel's second in four days, saw them leapfrog their opponents into third in the Group F table, one point behind leaders Greece, albeit having played a game more.
Maor Buzaglo had an early effort blocked by Genoa defender Kakha Kaladze, before Lior Rafaelov headed a cross from Portsmouth Tal Ben Haim's cross side.
Buzaglo should have done better from 12 yards but his weak shot was comfortably caught by Georgia goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili.
His opposite number, Dudu Aouate, was called into action after 16 minutes when he turned Alexander Amisulashvili's header from a Zurab Khizanishvili free-kick round the post.

Lejos de encontrar las facilidades encontradas en Budapest hace cuatro días, la selección de Holanda sufrió más de lo esperado para deshacerse en Amsterdam de Hungría, que liderado por el atacante Zoltan Gera estuvo cerca de cortar la impecable racha del cuadro de Bert Van Marwijk.

Skipper Zlatan Ibrahimovic set up the Birmingham midfielder to help make up for his first-half penalty miss, and the strike proved important after Alexandr Suvorov fired in a deserved goal for the visitors in stoppage time.
Victory for Sweden moved them level on nine points with second-placed Hungary, who meet Group E leaders Holland in Amsterdam later this evening.

Adrian Mutu scored twice as Romania came from behind to record their first win of their Euro 2012 qualification at home to Luxembourg tonight.
Lars Gerson gave the visitors a surprise lead midway through the first half, but Mutu struck back immediately and completed the comeback in the 68th minute.
Ianis Zicu added a third to put the game beyond Luxembourg and give Romania a first win in five Group D games.
They stayed fifth in the group, but moved to within a point of Bosnia-Herzegovina and two of Belarus and Albania.
The hosts were stunned in the 21st minute when Gabriel Muresan's could only clear Mario Mutsch's free-kick as far as Gerson.
The 21-year-old, who plays his club football in the Norwegian second division, fired a left-footed shot back into the top corner from the centre of the area.

Turkey 2 - 0 Austria
A goal in each half from Arda Turan and Gokhan Gonul earned Turkey three points in this evening's Euro 2012 qualifier against Austria in Istanbul.
Galatasaray playmaker Turan set the hosts on their way after 27 minutes and Fenerbahce full-back Gonul's first international goal 13 minutes from time made sure of the result.
Austria's disappointing evening was compounded by Stefan Maierhofer's late penalty miss as Guus Hiddink's side leapfrogged their visitors in the Group A standings.
Hamit Altintop asked the first question of Jurgen Macho in the sixth minute with a fierce drive from the edge of the area, but the Austria goalkeeper was up to the task and tipped the ball around the post.
Turkey stopper Volkan Demirel comfortably caught a David Alaba free-kick at the other end and then looked on as Alaba and then Paul Scharner fired wide.
Turan gave a warning of what was to come in the 21st minute when he headed over the bar from a Mehmet Ekici corner.
Seven minutes later the hosts were ahead, Turan lashing into the bottom-right corner from 12 yards.
